Founded in 1779 in the convolution of the three main rivers, the broad French, Holston and Tennessee, Knoxville became the first capital of Tennessee State. The town was named after General Henry Knox, a hero of the Revolutionary War and later Secretary of War under President George Washington. The area Knoxville was occupied by Columbian Mound Builders, the indigenous natives who built huge burial and ceremonial mounds in the river valleys of the area U.S. Midwest. Among notable former residents of Knoxville are: Grand Prize winner Pulitzer author James Agee and Cormac McCarthy, actors Patricia Neal, Polly Bergen, David Keith and Brad Renfro, the writer and director Quentin Tarrantino. Many restaurants are found here: Calhoun (barbecue), a local favorite, Ruth's Chris Steakhouse, The Melting Pot (fondue), dinner cruises with the Tennessee river boat company and a plethora of other good restaurants. The international flavor of the University and Oak Ridge Labs have encouraged many ethnic restaurants thrive, Indian, Italian, Mexican, Middle Eastern. . .
