Bucovina - A Travel Guide to the Romanian region of the painted monasteries
Bucovina is a region of monasteries, unique in the world for its frescoes of exterior colors. Equally well worth a visit are the villages, the main traditional lifestyle, and breathtaking scenery.
The name Bucovina may not mean much to many people, but Bucovina, and its brave princes, played an important role in the history of the Balkans during the XV and XVI and in particularly as regards relations with the Ottoman Empire. The impressive number of churches that are there with their fine exterior and interior frescoes, have been preserved and handed down from medieval times, and for its uniqueness and artistic value, is added to the list of UNESCO World Cultural Heritage in 1993. There is, in fact, no else in the world in which a group of churches, with such high quality exterior frescoes are visible.
The church was founded, in most cases, as burial places of the family of princes and high nobles. Every painter, although following the canonical iconographic program, interpreted the scenes in some differently. The scenes were painted on the walls inside, and then spread to the outside. The reasons for such scenes were mostly religious and didactic: to promote Orthodoxy and to educate the illiterate.
Tourist information in Romania: The concept of "tourist information" disappeared after the 1989 revolution because all the local tourist offices were abolished. Travel agencies created by the private sector has assumed the role of tourist information offices. They can provide you with information and services for organizing tours in Bucovina. Because Romanians themselves each increasingly prefer to travel outside Romania, travel agents are more specialized in organizing international travel. Local Tours have been neglected for many years but are now flourishing again.
The private sector is now the most advanced, and appreciated both inside and outside the country to the western level of comfort and services.
Tourist information can also be found in the annual publication of the Yellow Pages of Romania. All libraries Sales of travel guides, but not so easy to find travel guides of Bucovina in the main cities. An exception could be the newspaper shops.
