Abiraterone: the best hope for prostate cancer?
As the results of the first phase of trials published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, Abiraterone gained critical instant as the miracle drug to treat prostate cancer. The media immediately pounced on the story mid-July 2008 of the drug as the most significant advance in the field of therapy for prostate cancer in 70 years. Despite the promising results for Abiraterone its first test could legitimately have earned their right to boast. Given that history of prostate cancer, research shows that all Globally, nearly one third of men diagnosed with the disease die from it.
Prostate cancer usually affects men who have come in the fifties, and the risk increases the older they get. To detect or examine alleged cases of prostate cancer, the doctor usually starts with an antigen prostate-specific PSA blood test or after a biopsy if a test shows positive indicators for the disease. Currently, only the detection ensure early recovery of most cases of prostate cancer.
The male hormone testosterone ï ¿½ "done despite a vital role in the male anatomy ï ¿½ "stimulates prostate cancer tumors to grow. The current therapies to treat prostate cancer usually involves stopping the body from producing testosterone. This method can reduce the growth of existing tumors, or even decline. Most testosterone in the male anatomy is made by the testicles, but a significant ï ¿½ "ï ¿½ although small" is synthesized in other tissues in the body, including cancer itself. To create or synthesize testosterone, the body needs an enzyme called cytochrome P17, often referred to in research CYP17 € ™ s â € € œWhite Paper?.
Abiraterone, whose chemistry is the name of abiraterone acetate, also known as CB7630 works differently compared to other hormonal treatments for prostate cancer. Abiraterone acetate has a broad spectrum in blocking the enzyme CYP17, This prevents the testes and other tissues in the body of testosterone synthesis. Abiraterone has been recently used in clinical trials and experimental treatment prostate cancer. These early clinical trials focused on men with advanced prostate cancer whose prior treatment does not work as well for men with advanced prostate cancer that has spread or metastasized beyond the prostate gland.
Results of Phase 1 trials were published recently in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. Abiraterone during the tests, 80% of men had a decrease in their levels of prostate specific antigen (PSA) tests accompanied by tumor shrinkage. A drop in PSA levels usually the number of cancer cells has been reduced. Some of the men chronic pain sufferers of prostate cancer tumors were able to take much lower doses of painkillers, a sure sign of improvement. Reducing PSA lasted just over two months in some men, while in other matters, the reduction level of 18 months.
Side effects were generally mild, but it reminds patients on hormone replacement therapy. These include a change in the levels of sodium and potassium in the blood, an accumulation of fluid in the ankles / general edema, increased blood pressure, headaches, loss of appetite, fatigue and hot flashes.
Phase 2 trials are underway, but results have not yet been published. Focused on men whose previous hormone therapy no longer works. These men were abiraterone that Abiraterone longer worked, they were given a steroid called href = "http://dexamethasone.info/dexamethasone-in-adults-with-bacterial-meningitis/" target = "_self"> dexamethasone. The first results were announced in June 2008, and seemed promising, was hailed by the media as the biggest breakthrough in research on cancer prostate. Men taking Abiraterone only ï ¿½ "most of them ï ¿½", show a decrease in their PSA levels. A sign course of treatment stopped the cancer from growing or developing. In 50% of men with tumors can be measured in the scan, the cancer is reduced or didnâ € ™ t grow even more. PSA levels were reduced by half in almost 70% of men participating in clinical trials although the PSA level of men participating has increased again after 7 months. Despite the promising results, abiraterone currently only available for men participating in a clinical trial.
Based on provisional results, the latest participants in the trial abiraterone should be examined as a precaution. Due to changes in drug levels of sodium and potassium in the blood and increases blood pressure, men with a history of heart disease and high blood pressure are not allowed to participate in the Abiraterone trials. So the men who have been treated with a drug called ketoconazole, has a history of liver disease or currently have another type of cancer and / or secondary brain cancer. Experts say that based on all hormone therapy to cure prostate cancer ï ¿½ "ï ¿½ including abiraterone" carries the risk of impotence, urinary tract problems and incontinence.
In the past, prostate cancer tends to be the forefront of consciousness when someone famous only helped to overcome the disease by current treatment regimen at the time. In November 1987, USA President Ronald Reagan underwent surgery transurethral prostate due to benign prostatic hypertropy, causing a greater awareness of prostate cancer. In the world of entertainment, Bill Foxa € œThe â €? Foster Emcee Comedy Central € ™ s â € œThe man Showa €? died of prostate cancer May 10, 2000. His family asked that we (the followers of Man Show) to honor his memory by urging viewers to get their male prostate examined regularly by your doctor. Many felt that with early detection, the bill â € œThe Foxa €? Promoted € ™ s death could have been avoided.
